About

Hannah Holquist was born and raised in Long Island, New York and will graduate from the University of Rochester with degrees in Biology and Studio Art. She focuses on drawing, painting, and printmaking while also integrating those two-dimensional elements into installation spaces. Holquist’s art has been shown in juried art exhibitions on the University of Rochester campus as well as in her hometown. She also works as a gallery attendant at Hartnett Art Gallery where she assists local artists in Rochester with planning exhibitions and installing their work. In these positions, Holquist has learned about both sides of exhibiting art and, through those experiences, has developed a passion for sharing that understanding through more accessible art education and discussion.

Artist Statement

Holquist's current work conveys the complex relationships between the human body and the places we consider ‘home.’ Being fascinated by the differences between the ways individuals experience the world, she seeks to expand on the symbols and imagery that define the structure and function of these two realms in order to explore their similarities more thoroughly. In re-imagining anatomy, both internal and external, and architecture, her work stimulates a colorful and fantastical representation of others’ interpretations of reality. In putting these ideas on display, the connections between people, places, the material and the immaterial are highlighted thereby encouraging a more empathetic society. After many years of training to achieve photorealism in her depictions, Holquist attempts to depart from the conventional drawing and painting techniques by combining paper sculpture, book making, and various drawing implements to achieve a more personal and vulnerable body of work.
